Each year on June 27, a National HIV Testing Day is observed, partners are united, health departments, and other organizations to raise awareness and plan events about the importance of HIV testing and early diagnosis of HIV.

National HIV Testing Day (NHTD) was first observed on June 27, 1995. NHTD is a day to encourage people to get tested for HIV, know their status, and get linked to care and treatment

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), over 1.1 million people in the in the world have HIV, and one in seven of them don’t know that they have it. Hence, the need for June 27, National HIV Testing Day, an annual occasion to encourage people to get an HIV test. CDC recommends that everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 get tested for HIV at least once as part of routine health care. People at higher risk should get tested more often.

This year’s theme, “Doing It My Way,” is the same as last year’s and highlights the many ways people can make HIV testing a part of their lives on their terms and in their way. Doing It My Way encourages individuals to share their personal testaments of why testing is important, what motivates them to get tested and stay healthy, and how they get tested—be it at home, at the clinic, or with the company of a friend or loved one.

As that campaign notes, with so many ways to get tested for HIV—at home, at the doctor’s office, with a friend—finding the one that’s right for you should be easy.

The campaign encourages people to share their preferred testing methods on social media using the hashtags DoingItMyWay, #HIVTestingDay #NHTD
