A 27-year-old man, Ifeanyi Nwachukwu, who allegedly stole two side mirrors worth N550, 000 from a jeep, was on Wednesday charged before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.
Nwachukwu, who resides at Apapa area of Lagos State, is facing a charge of stealing.
The Prosecutor, Sgt. Olusegun Kokoye, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Sept. 4 at Freedom Park Market, KiriKiri, Apapa, Lagos.
He alleged that the accused entered the market around 11.45 p.m. and stole the side mirrors, property of Freedom Park Market Association.
Kokoye said that the accused was caught by some security guards who saw him lurking about in the dark.
“The security guards saw him with the mirrors and asked where he got them from; he could not give any satisfactory account of how he got them,’’ he said.
Kokoye said the guards handed over the accused to the police the following morning.
He said the offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 stipulates a three-year jail term for offenders.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge. The Senior Magistrate, Mr M.A. Etti, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case until Oct. 29 for mention.
