Prostitution as some people call it or sex work, is the practice, business, or occupation of engaging in sexual activity with someone in exchange for payment. There are an estimated 42 million prostitutes around the world and while some are legal others are illegal in some parts of the world.

The sex worker rights movement has grown significantly over the past two decades. Sex workers have organized to demand recognition of sexual labor as labor; challenge stigma, discrimination, and all forms of violence, including by law enforcement; improve working conditions; lobby for full human, social, and labor rights; advocate for the decriminalization of sex work; and provide peer-based support and services.

There are organizations that promote the rights, safety, and security of sex workers and addressing working conditions in the industry which has largely gone unrecognized by national and international policymakers, donors, and some non-governmental organizations.

Prostitution is seen as a major issue for religious groups and causes controversy within feminist activism. Some feminists believe that prostitution harms women and reinforces stereotypical views about women as sex objects while other feminists believe that prostitution is a valid choice for women since women can confidently do what they want with their bodies, prostitution should be on the list.

Why use the term “sex worker” rather than “prostitute”?

The term “sex worker” recognizes that sex work is work. Prostitution, on the other hand, has connotations of criminality and immorality. Many people who sell sexual services prefer the term “sex worker” and find “prostitute” demeaning and stigmatizing, which contributes to their exclusion from health, legal, and social services

There are different types of legality when it comes to prostitution. Prohibitionism means that prostitution is illegal. Neo-abolitionism considers prostitution to be violence against women, and so the clients and pimps are prosecuted, not the prostitute. Abolitionism considers prostitution to be legal; however, public solicitation, operating brothels, and pimping are prohibited. The legalization of prostitution allows prostitution and employment of prostitutes to be legal but is regulated. Decriminalization of prostitution treats prostitution like any other labor and is subject to minimal or no special regulations. Some countries have different local laws regarding prostitution.

Although women should feel free to do whatever they want it’s their body after all, but what does prostitution say about its customers? Do they inquire about the individual before engagement? Is there exceptions to married folks? Or it isn’t bothered as to whether single or married?

Why engage in sex work?

Sex workers sell sexual services in order to earn a livelihood. The vast majority of sex workers choose to do sex work because it is the best option they have, many sex workers struggle with poverty and destitution and have few other options for work, others find that sex work offers better pay and more flexible working conditions than other jobs. Prostitution occurs in a variety of forms and its legality varies from country to country which reflects different opinions on exploitation, gender roles, ethics and morality, freedom of choice, and social norms.

Making prostitution a job?

Should Prostitution be a job? (we can agree on whether it should be…or not?).

The fight for equality, respect and commercialization of the woman body is still on why do the opposite? But as long as there are men, there will be demand for sex which is OK for consenting adult. On the other hand, physical and sexual assault will rise at alarming levels.

Any government that allows the decriminalization of pimping and sex-buying sends a message to its citizens that women are vessels for male sexual consumption. If prostitution is “work”, will states create training programs for girls to perform the “best oral sex” for sex buyers?.

“but well, since they are offering sex services to people and we know the wonders sex does to the human body and mind, maybe just maybe it should be a job”

“If prostitution is “sex work”, then by its own logic, rape is merely theft (there is no justification for rape whatsoever). The inside of a woman’s body should never be viewed as a workplace”

  1. I disagree. Any govt that make sex work legal is saying “we will protect you, we recognize you and you are safe. “I think it will make sexual assault even lesser.
when a sex worker is raped, she can’t go to the police because she knows she wont be protected.
Rape is maybe theft, abeg x3.
