What does digital Culture mean?

In today’s world, people now use different applications, browsers, and technologies to connect with each order to be current as fast as the speed of light. People take this for granted because most do not care to know the origin and how it came to be what is accessible by even the toddlers in the house. Therefore, this article would treat the origin, transitions and where we are now in digital culture.

The Origin

The need to communicate effectively without interruption during the cold war led the United States government to demand for a strategic system that could withstand any weapon of destruction even the nuclear bomb. It became obvious that the armies did not have in possession such communication system. This era, the Strategic Air Command was opened to just two avenues of communication. The telephone system and the high-frequency or shortwave radio.

For this reason, users needed a system that could connect more than two devices to a system. The cold war era (1950-1960) was a time when politicians supported all inventions and money for computers and network computers came from the government. The idea of Arpanet was that it would eventually combine computing resources. Arpanet (Advanced Research Project Agency Network) was an early packet-switching network, today’s Internet prototype. It was invented in 1969 by the US Department of Defense.

Arpanet has demonstrated the effectiveness of the package change. And it showed that it is possible to let heterogeneous computers communicate with each other over a single packet-switched network. After the construction of Arpanet many people built networks, competition started. Everyone had their own things that they wanted to do. In anticipation of the chaos of multiple networks that could not communicate, Bob Kahn and Vint Cerf designed the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) in 1973.

The Introduction of Internet and Personal Computers

Internet came into existence. The term “Internet” has its roots in TCP, a way to connect networks together. With the introduction of TCP, the Internet has been hosted by academic researchers and other pioneers. The roots of web culture can be seen at this stage. Then, in 1977, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak introduced one of the first personal computers. We can definitely say that these events, which lasted over 25-30 years, were the beginning of a so-called digital culture. The networked society is an expression of the social, political, economic and cultural changes brought about by the spread of information technologies and networked communication.

The Internet and Mobility

The introduction of World Wide Web in 1990 brought about lots in the transition. It brought about MySpace in 2003, YouTube in 2005, Facebook in 2006, etc. The internet has now become something everyone cannot do without, its ubiquitous nature now led to many online content being accessed through mobile devices.

Undoubtedly, the growth and increasing accessibility of the Internet has opened up a new world of opportunities from social networking to e-commerce to electronic currencies to pro-gaming and so on. But the world we live in has changed fast. Social conventions are different, entertainment is different, everything is affected by this not entirely new platform.

The Friction

Newspapers are the most discussed victims of the new media landscape, but they are not the only victims of the new digital world. The way we listen to music and watch TV has also changed dramatically. With the influx of online streaming through apps like Netflix, YouTube and other social media platforms, the television got challenged and led to the introduction of digital TV but one day it would be extinct because online platforms now stream live events.

There is another question about the future of digital culture and its interaction with society. Will the incredibly fast growth of the last 10, 20 and 30 years go on in the future? Or will there be another dark age? It would be very surprising if the digital technology culture slows down because, whenever there is a market that will be used, the creation and introduction of new technologies will continue.

Think of AT & T executives who cannot imagine how the new packet switching system would work, or Microsoft’s, who signed off netscape programmers. It may be hard to imagine what follows, but perhaps it will perhaps be something so changeable that people who are children will have a hard time imagining their lives without him. After all, this has happened dozens of times over the past 50 years, especially in the technology and information technology sectors.
