What does SEO really mean?

SEO, which in full means Search Engine Optimization, on a basic level of understanding, is your ability to attract potential customer using search engines like Google and Bing to bring them to your website. It is literally the optimized use of search engines to draw potential customers, readers, visitors, and traffic to your website.

In other words, it is the overall term used for all the methods you can use to ensure the visibility of your website and its content on search engine results pages (SERPs). Hence; there are various methods to get this done as a website owner or manager.

There are some things you can achieve behind the scenes on your website (they are usually referred to as ‘on-page SEO’) and there are the promotional ‘off-page’ approaches you can use to increase or enhance your website’s visibility approaches like: link-building and social media marketing.

The word ‘Visibility’ in this article means how high up the SERP your website and its contents appear for certain search terms in the ‘organic’ results. When we say organic results, it means those that appear naturally on the page, rather than in the paid-for sections which are often backed up with the word ‘sponsored’ on search results.

To attain the first level of actions to having a good SEO, you must be able to build your site architecture in a user-friendly and clear navigating format. This will help search engines index your site quickly and easily. Most importantly, it provides visitors with a good experience of using your site and instigate repeat visits and referrals. It is important to know that Google pays high attention to user experience.

Another thing to consider is determining the keyword your potential customers will use when they search Google. You determine your keyword through keyword research you know your online business or the website that your online business is on could be easily attached with. Therefore, your ability to bring those potential customers to your website by targeting keywords that are related to your online industry aids your Search Engine Optimization.

Looking at its advantages, search engines try to provide the most relevant results to a searcher’s query whether it is a simple answer to a question “how many states are in United States of America?” (Such answer which Google will likely provide without you having to leave the SERP) to more complicated queries such as “what is the best food truck nearest to me?”

Though, these results are being provided according to search engines internal algorithms which we will probably never truly determine but there are notable factors like searcher’s location, search history, time of day/year, etc., that are relevant and will influence these results.

Therefore, the quality of your content, amongst other things like site speed, user experience, internal linking, authority, meta descriptions and title tags, etc., is very important. Do you regularly publish helpful, useful articles, videos or other types of media that are popular and well produced? Do you have human beings in mind when writing or the search engine itself? The former should be your concern.

Evidently, a proper mixture of all the elements mentioned above will result to a good SEO for your website and will, in turn, yield a substantial traffic experience as a website or blog owner.
